Material Selection

December 6th, 2014 by admin

Material selection affects surface hardness and depth of hardness. The surface hardness and depth of carbon steels, certain alloys, and stainless steel varies. Depending on the type of material, the continuation of nitrogen penetration in the diffusion zone occurs to a depth between .003" to .04" at a descending gradient of hardness. Materials that are commonly salt bath nitrided include:
  • Low to Medium Carbon Steel
  • Alloy Steel
  • Stainless Steel
  • Cast Iron
  • Tool and Die Steel
